The room
Ontano
Alder trees grow along the streams; I used to love taking the cows out to graze in those parts – there was so much to play with. I knew how to light a fire at the age of seven and would sneak into any nook and cranny my parents had warned me not to go near. I used to play with kids from the lowlands who came on holiday, and we were all equally wild.
A stay in the mountains
A refuge amongst streams and alders
The alder is a broad-leaved tree; at lower altitudes, it grows into a large tree that lines the banks of rivers. Up here it remains small, little more than a shrub. If there is a right side and a wrong side to everything – a state of mind, certain days, or the clothes we wear – the alder is the wrong side; it is the hidden part, the home of wild boars, the ideal den.
